Finally Enrolled for MS from BITS Pilani

by on Jul.21, 2011, under Famous Moments

Finally, after my unsuccessful attempts in CAT, joined M.S. (Software Systems) from BITS Pilani 2011-2013, Distant Education. I always wanted to pursue technical course for my Post-graduate but due to increased job opportunities after MBA, I became more inclined to CAT when I was in final year of my college. I guess why I had a history of failed attempts in CAT :P While few of my friends joined on the equivalent scores. I never opted for it.

My past year’s CAT Scores:
1. 2007 Attempt (in B. Tech. – Final year) – 91 %
2. 2008 Attempt (in Pioneer eServer Pvt Ltd.) – Will Not Say
3. 2009 Attempt (in HCL Tech.) – 89 %
4. 2010 Attempt (in HCL Tech.) – Will Not Say
5. 2011 Attempt (in STPI) – No More CAT, screw you :x I am not made for it :P

So, finally I applied for M.S. from BITS Pilani (Distant Education) and my profile got shortlisted. Yay. Will be doing postgraduate finally. Classes begins from third week of July, 2011. Studies along with work can be tough and will be tough. But, I will manage :)

First, U need 2 years of experience to apply for it.
You need to show ur profile relevancy with the course.
Ex -  You are in Software Development, Testing or even System Administration would be great!

    Whats ur job profile ?

  • Sanjeev

hi,can you tell me what kind of profile/academic scores one should have to get selected, i.e. how was your profile(qualifying degree marks, any special academic achivements)?
what should i do to make my profile stronger, whether go for some paper presentations or something like that?
please guide, going to apply in next sem.
    Regrdssanjeev

    Following Considerations :
    1. Make your Job profile strong – The MS program must help you out in the current work profile.
    2. A good Mentor  – Make sure the Mentor is PG and has 5 +n years of IT Exp.

    All the best :)

  • Sanjeev

can you please elaborate on making the job profile strong, i.e. how can i do that being low on experience(1yr only).
and also, what were your profile’s strong points so that i can compare and see what chances do i stand.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org Rahul Singh

That is fine, being a B. Tech. might not be much problem. 60% + aggregate qulifies you to apply for it.

Being a distant education program, you cannot expect to get placements from it. It will help in your career and promotions in future, all depend where you are working :) And the knowledge that you gain is priceless :)

  • Sanjeev

i am in development. But my degree % is only 70 and that too not from some premier institute, is it fine?
one more thing, what growth can be expected by doing this, like does the designation and job level get incresed or there can be good hikes on complition of course?

  • Shivakumarashokan

hey, planning to apply for this program…. do we have to submit a separate work profile or is the work profile in the employer consent form enough… thanks in advance for replying

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org Rahul Singh

It is better you make a work profile yourself and get it signed by the employer.

You can specify the technologies you know and the ones you are working on, apart from designation and current project you are working on.

  • Saurabh

hi can you tell me about the schedule of online classes? How are these held, my employer is asking me to provide the exact timings of the classes so that they can schedule my working hours accordingly.

    Thanks,
    Saurabh

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Raul Singh

Timings depend on the subjects you choose. And if you miss you can download them later on anytime. They are mostly held at 8-9 in morning and 4-5 in evening.

  • Saurabh

Thanks for the clarification. Is there any mandatory attendance for lectures? Or we can download and study as and when we get time?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Raul Singh

It is not mandatory. No attendance. All you need is marks to pass. that’s it!

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Raul Singh

Much of it already answered in the comments, kindly go through them.

It is not like that they chose people from Development or testing or support. You have to justify how this will help in your work, get permission from your HR/Admin and then they choose based on this application. No entrance test.

    All the best!

    Hi Rahul,
I went through all your comments about BITS Pillani MS System Software. I found it very intersting. I too have some queries if you can please answer them. I have 5.5 years work exp n I am BSc comp Science from Mumbai University.
    My queries are as below..
    1. With the qualifiction am I eligible for the distance learning program?
    2. Is mentor mandatory?
    3. Is this program recognised internationally and will I be certified as Master in IT?

Hope to get my queries resolved soon.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Twinkle

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Raul Singh

     1. Yes you are eligible.

    2. Yes Mentor is mandatory. I can a be mentor after June 2013, in case you don’t get one. I can help you out.

    3. Note – It is UGC Certified and NOT AICTE approved. So many institutes/companies mention the same.
For Higher education, yes you can go for it in many prestigious college. You can also apply in various govt sectors and yes it is Post-Graduate Degree :)

  • Twinkle Shah

Thanks Rahul for your instant reply. One more query for you since I am eligible, Is the admission for this year over and I will have to apply next year in June 2013, or still I can apply? I went through the links you have posted in blogs it seems the nest admission date will be posted in this month.

    Thanks,

  • Prem Kumar

HI…I am Prem, Would like to know if it is possible to study MS SS in BITS from USA through Distance learning? I mean is the exam centers are available in USA? Please guide, thanks

  • Vignesh

    Hi Rahul.,
I have few queries for you.
I have completed by B.Tech Information Technology in Coimbatore Institute of Technology,Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu
I have joined software industry just 4 months back, currently working with Microsoft technologies.
I am interested in pursuing my higher studies in MS.
Can you pls tell me the options that are available both in BITS and outside BITS ?
Is it the right time to start my higher studies now ?Else what is the right time to start my MS ?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Raul Singh

     Dear Vignesh,
For BITS MS correspondence course is 1 year Work Experience is required. For Correspondence this is the best program in India followed by Manipal and many other Open Universities like IGNOU, etc.

More better would be if you could do Part Time MS/ME/M Tech from IITs/NITs. classes are conducted in weekends and duration is 3 years instead of 2 years in previous courses. For Details keep checking their websites.

MS helps in getting a post graduate degree and helps in future promotions in PSU/Govts or of graet value if you are in R&D Organizations.

Hope this clarifies. All the best!

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Raul Singh

Sorry. BITS MS ha no test center in USA as on date. They have one in Dubai.

Solution – You can come India to give exams, they conduct 2 times (mid Sem & end Sem) in a Semester and there are 4 sems total. Or doing MS form US would be a better idea I guess.

  • Lavanyapathuri

Hello Raul Singh, Could you please tell me, do we need to crack an entrance test to get into MS in BITS. If yes, whether it will be different for individuals and those who join through WILP. Kindly let me know the syllabus for that.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Raul Singh

There is no entrance to BITS MS, it is based on your Work Profile and your Application. All the best!

  • Twinkle Oracle

    Hi Rahul,
The admission notification for second semester are out. is that the one you mentioned?
Another thing in the form I didnt find BSc mentioned anywhere, hence I have a doubt whether I am eligible for the same or not..

    Please guide…

    Thanks,
    Twinkle

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Raul Singh

You can apply for BS and not MS : http://wilpdar.bits-pilani.ac.in/application/12011/pre_app_form_bs.htm

MS can be applied only by BE/B Tech/MCA.

Few organizations have tie up with BITS pilani and they undergo.. BS CUm MS integrated program like Wipro.

Solution – You can apply for BS and then MS.

    Hi Rahul,
May i Know for a batch how many members will be given admission?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Raul Singh

They don’t declare this officially not even to students but I had checked registered students in subjects in portal and found it to be around 1200.

  • Prem Kumar

Thanks for your reply. Let me think and decide.

  • Chenthilkumar87

    Raul,

Please clarify my doubts. Thanks in advance..

    1. Does the MS (SS) WILP comes under Engineering / Science?

    2. Were all the MS programmes being offered by BITS Pilani approved by AICTE?

    3. I am a MCA graduate. Will it be useful to me if I do this?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Raul Singh

    1. Yes it is equivalent to ME/ MTech
    2.  NO, it is not approved. It is only UGC Certified.
    3. NO. It is basically meant for BE/B Tech to get a PG degree.. best suited for promotions or if in R&D Organization.

    You should opt for PhD

  • Chenthil

     Mr. Raul,

Thanks. I work in IBM. I too thought the same. Can you please suggest me some best institutions like BITS to do Ph.D.

  • Confused Guy

Hi Rahul, How u doin? I am currently employed in an organisation with interests in Hospitality, Mining, Steel, finanace etc. our IT dept. basically provides support for rest of the organisations IT needs which includes the ERP, websites , applications, networks I am into developing websites and desktop applications and hve 3+ yrs exp. I am planning to gaining knowledge on the various advanced subjects, which help me understand technologies especially networking to take up a jr management position in IT   dept how would this program be of use to me? thanks in advance

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Raul Singh

You can do PhD  from many colleges. Try to get from reputed colleges. Try IISC Bangalore. I don’t have much idea about it but it is worth it. Yes they have work integrated PhD program.

  • Chhaya

    Hi  Rahul

I am applying for dec 2012 batch. Just wanted to know whether they allow breaks..i mean if i want an year break after 2 semesters.. is it possible?

I have already mailed the query to BITS, Pilani and still waiting for their reply.

Would be great help if you can find out.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Raul Singh

Yes, you can drop a semester by not registering in the same. 2 years Degree should be completed in maximum 6 years (from not verified source) means you can drop maximum 8 times.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

For understanding technologies you must go for Professional Courses like – CCNA, SA, RHEL, Web Based etc.
MS id basically to help you out if you are either in R&D Organization or seeking PG degree for your next promotion.

Choose wisely. Ask you management/HR what is preferred ?

  • Nuthan Nr07

will there be any classes held for this course? is it really worth doing Ms in BITS distance learning? how good is the syllabus?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Depends on your requirements and goals. Ask your Seniors regarding this. This benefits mainly people working in R&D Organization or for promotional grounds where PG degree is must.

Online lectures are held and are available post recorded later on to refer too.

  • Malvika

    Hi,

Just wanted to know.. What is the role of the mentor we choose?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Practically no use as such except signing in the start of the session and then in the last sem of project. Theoretically why it is needed is mentioned on their website :)

Please go through the information on their website. I will clear most of your doubts.

  • Malvika

    Ok.. Thnxx :)

  • Piyush

    Hi Rahul,
I want to persue this MS in SS. I currently work in TCS in Development of Oracle BI products having 2 yr. of work experience.
I know that its a Distance education programme  So we can’t expect placements, but at least can we persue Phd or become eligible for PSU exams after gaining this Degree? Is the degree acceptable across India?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Yes you can. But please be aware it is not AICTE Approved. It is UGC Approved. You may do PhD but only from BITS Pilani in future. You will not be able to do full time PhD as the course id not AICTE approved.

However the MS degree will help you in getting into PSU/Central Govt or promotions :)

  • sudheervanapalli

    Hi Rahul,
I have one query regarding employment consent form…
1)Do i need to get education sponsorship from my company?
2)If the company is sponsoring partially but only after the completion of the course(which field should i tick in EC form)?
3)Will they reject if i don’t get sponsorship from company?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    1) No. Its not compulsory.
    2) Tick not funded. Pay from your own pocket. Claim the amount after you complete the course.
    3) No. Even I’m doing NOT sponsored and I may get some amount after completion. SO i have ticked Not Sponsored.

    All the best!

  • Shridharan

Hi Rahul, I want to apply for MS in BITS Pilani. When will the application will be given? what is the procedure to apply?

Dates are put well in advance.

  • Shridharan

Hi Rahul, thanks for the info. In the admission notification page, i’m able to see M.S. Software Systems course. If I want to apply for M.S. in Software Engineering, can i apply in this course. Is both Software Systems and Software Engineering are same?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Only one course is available : M.S. – Software Systems as mentioned on their website. It is almost similar to S.E., you can check the subjects offered in the course put up in website.

  • Shreyas Mahajan

     Hi Rahul,

Thanks for the post. I am planning to apply for MS software systems for December 2012 semester. The deadline for application is 31st October. I am working in R&D dept of one reputed MNC since 3.3 years, which is my total experience.

The problem is I have resigned in my current company and I will be joining my new company on 5th November (past application deadline). So, right now I am planning to ask my current company if they are willing to give consent letter & apply with that and then after admission, ask new company again….

Is it fine?  Can you please answer following questions –

    1. What role does the mentor play after admission? Will it be right to say that it is just for name’s sake and we are mostly on our own throughout? I am planning to tell this to manager :)

    2. Also, what role does the employer organization play? Can I tell my company that just give me the consent right now, I will change to new company afterwards?

Thanks for reading till this line :)

    Regards,
    Shreyas

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Yes, you can join. you are eligible.
Apply for the course with all formalities and fill the current employer name. After you switch and get admission meanwhile, there is a process to change the current employer. Hassle free – Just a form to fill up and get a letter from your new company that they don have any problem with your MS (same form submitted by earlier employer to be filled by new employer)
Many of my friends did this in our batch so not a problem.

    1. Mentor is name sake. Signature needed in start of joining and in 4th Sem in Project. They need CV + Degree of Mentor. Make sure you have it.

    2. Yes you can change the company n number times not a issue just a form to be filled up.

    All the best :)

  • Shreyas Mahajan

    Thanks a lot!! :)

  • Sudheer Vanapalli

    Hi Rahul,
can you send me the address to which the duly filled form should be send

  • Nishana

Hi.. Thanks for the info. Could you please give me a quick answer? I am in urgent need. I saw that MS in SS is open for Dec 12 sem. Looks like its for second sem. I filled the application form and now in the page to do payment. So, I am not sure if I can apply for second sem without attending first semester. If not, why is it open to the world? I am confused. Can I go ahead and do the payment? Your quick reply will be appreciated.

This is the URL from where I got admission forms: http://www.bits-pilani.ac.in/university/wilp/AdmissionNotification

Would really appreciate if you can email me.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

This might look surprising but BITS Pilani takes 2 Batches of admission(for MS). One in December and other one in May-June. It has nothing to do with 1st n 2nd sem. Your course will end after 4 sems. ie if you join in December 2012 your course will complete in December 2014.

So go ahead for the admission and all the best!

  • Vinoth

    Hi Rahul,
is there any format available for employer and mentor consent or to be prepared by own?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Please check if they have any format on their website.

Mr Rahul, I need your help in applying BITS MSS Programme . can you suggest me how to write career objective in applying for the same programme.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Tip – Just make sure you include stuff like learning more and more and achieving the career goals from them.
in shorting climbing the ladder of your career by leaning more and more.

    all the best!

  • sudheer

    Hi Rahul…. One final question….
can we send the application through courier or should we have to send it through normal post…

  • nagaraj s k

    Hey Rahul,

I have enrolled for MS systems software via distance learning in 2008, completed by 2 sem by 2009, but i had a RRA(grade) for one of the subject from 1st sem, this means i have to re-write this,i am lacking the info on

    1. how to go about this, should i be giving this along with 3rd sem or clear this in prior

    2. since i have a gap of around 2 years now, can i still take this up, i am from Bangalore, i tried reaching on few numbers and wrote few mails on late 2009, did not get response from BITS(may be i was searching at wrong place).

i need to get started again, appreciate if you can point me with right contact or give some info on this..

    thanks

    Nagaraj

  • satyajeet

Hi Rahul, I have been selected for MS Software Systems. My query is that when you get the final degree, is Distance Learning mentioned on the degree certificate?

my second query is that MS Software systems is a PG Degree like MCA, MTECH,MSc?

and third question: is all other university accept MS Software Systems as a valid degree? , i am asking this because this programme is online mode?

4th question: where will classes be conducted?

    with regaards
    satyajeet

  • sudheer

    Hi Rahul,
I’ve got enrolled for MS software systems. Can you tell me how can i get original fee receipt from BITS because i’ve to submit in office to claim the money.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

They usually send in a month after submitting the fees via speed post. It must reach in a month.
else you can send email to admin (email ID on Website) inquiring for the same.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

1 – On Degree no where Distance word is mentioned. It is written as MS – Software Systems.
Note – In Bits they give M. Tech Degree to regular Students and MS to Distance Programs.

2- Yes it is a PG Degree equivalent to ME/MTech

3- This course id UGC Approved and not AICTE Approved. Means you CANNOT do regular PhD or apply for professor jobs. It helps in departmental promotions, adding star in your CV, etc only.

4- Classes are conducted online via web conference. Attending them is not compulsory. They are later uploaded on Taxila Portal for later download.

    All the best :)

Thanks Rahul for answering my query. but BITS Didnt mention anywhere that MS is PG Degree equivalent to ME/MTech?

  • SanguineVandana

Hi Rahul, I am a B.tech CSE student 2011 passout with 10 months experience in a s/w firm. I am intrested in this MS (SE) program. But lill worried about exams and project work. As a miss in sem would lead to lots of wastage of money. Are they very tough? I have time just till 20 november to decide, so reply soon. And in the cchecklist of documents provided to me at the end of application form, i am asked only for 10th certi, all four years attested btech marksheets, attested degree certi and photos. there is no mention of any cv or employent consent letter or mentor requirement any where. So wat should i do? Should i submit only requested documents without any mentor. And if i decide finally to join this program, help me out to get it through in 2 years only. Thanks in advance.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

They are easy for engineering students :) Don worry!
Just read their website instructions and provide the document they ask.
    All the best!

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Is it written in Website that B. Tech is Graduate Course ?
MS – Master of Science is Post-Graduate Course. UGC Recognized.

For being equivalent to ME/M Tech. I work in Central Govt Office and for me its recognized as ME/M Tech and helpful in my promotions as PG is compulsory.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

It was 30K per semester when I joined and got revised to 3250 per Sem from this year!
Apart from this one Time Registration Fees is charged – Rs 15K
Fees is mentioned on their website as well.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Yes, you can look for mentors from other organization. In fact I had Mentor from HCL Noida and I am working in STPI Mumbai.
You have to justify how the mentor from other organization can be useful. Mention – “Mentor and me have regular interactions”.

Note – You need Degree Certificate photocopy while registration,

  • Yogesh Kamath

Does the letter stating mentor will not be from employer ‘s org need to be given on employer ‘s letterhead or we can give on plain paper by ourselves

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Plain paper yourself. Signed by you.
    I ddi the same.

Hi, is this program recognised internationally? i mean is it internal or recognised by all?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Getting addmission is not togh, if your an Engineer.

    Details on Website.
    All the best!

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    There is no such news.

BITS Pilani MS is designed for working executives. So they conduct classes online in weekdays(mornings & evenings) and recorded lectures are available for students who could not attend the same. Attending the lecture online is not compulsory, but getting marks is :)

    So, all the best!

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

BITS MS is an offline mode of course for working executives. It is for working executives. No entrance test, selection is based on profile. No entrance test.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

The classes are conducted online and are generally on early morning and evenings and few of them on Saturday as well.

Attending them is not compulsory. The live lectures are recorded and can be downloaded later on from TAXILA site. So no problem if you miss them.

Getting marks in exam and passing is however must :)

Hi rahul,i have 1 year of IT experience and interested in doing MS distance from BITS Pilani, my company is not sponsoring fee for it can i apply for it through other company which sponsers it,if it is possible can u brief me what is the approach.
    Thank you

  • Bhaskar Mangapati

Thanks for your reply Rahul. I am residing in Hyderabad Does Hyderabad campus support this distance education. Do i need to go Hyderabad campus for examinations.?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Any working professional can do the MS course, sponsoring is not must in terms of fee. All you need letter from HR(current emplyed organization) that they don’t have any objection in your pursuing of your course. Which is generally easy to obtain. And if you switch organization in course, you need to get that letter again for your new organization.

Selection is based on profile and easy.
    All the best!!

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Yes you can take the course from Hyderabad.
For examinations you will have to go to the examination center. That will be 2 days for mid sem and 2 days for end sem in one semester. Exams are on weekends.

  • sriram

    Thanks Rahul..!!!

    Hi Rahul,

I came to know about BITS MS SS program through one of my friends. I just want to know whether this program will provide me with an added advantage in my CV or will it prove to be a waste of money and time??? Second thing i want to know is career wise…..i work as an SAP-ABAP consultant in a company……ALL I want to know is whether it is worth the effort????? I am asking this becoz i am skeptical about distant learning.

    Regards,
    joyal

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

No. its useful for getting promotions in PSUs/Govt. Or if you are in R&D and being PG is essential both in terms of knowlegde and degree.

For CV point of view you must focus on relevant certifications.

  • deepak

    Hi,

I am working with TCS for 3 Years and want to pursue MS SS from BITS Pilani, can ne1 guide me how to apply ? How many intakes per year ?

Or Are there any other Good institutes for Part Time MS/M Tech ???

    Hi Rahul,
I have completed my M.Sc in Economics and several software certifications. Currently I am working in R&D Software Development in a MNC. Can you tell me what are the chances of me getting selected in the MS SS, BITs Pilani? I have around one year work experience.

  • mamatha

hi, could you tell me the entrance exam syllabus for ME software systems full time course

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

I have no idea of this. Check the eligibility criteria in their website.
Alternate, You may apply for the course with relevant documents. Applying for the course is free. You have to pay the fees once selected.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

BITS MS is one of the best institutes to do correspondence MS, you cannot compare with part-time M. Tech. of IITs and NITs. Later would be better is you can manage to attend the weekend classes.

    All the best!

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

There is no exam for BITS MS program. The selection is profile based.

I have no idea of ME degree.

  • Mita

    Thanks for your reply.

  • Shreyas

Hey Rahul, did you ever attend the make-up exam? I want to postpone my EC2 exam to make-up, but the requirements on their website are slightly confusing… They don’t require employer’s/mentor’s consent for that right? Do they allow everyone who fills form of make-up exam to take it?

    Thanks,
    Shreyas

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

I never gave make up exams. Always try to give the regular exams as make up exams are quite tough.

Yes, no proof is required from employer, all those who skip may give the makeup exam. few of my colleagues gave this exam.

  • Shreyas

hmmm… Didn’t know makeups are tougher than regular ones…. Thanks a lot!!

  • Priya

Hi, Wanted to know when applications from candidates are invited every year. Is it always after April? Is this displayed on the website when they do begin the process every year?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Yes Admissions are two times a year. One in April and other in November. Keep checking the website for latest details.

  • Rahul

    Hi Rahul
I am planning for doing MS this year as i have done BE(E&TC) and having 6 yrs of eceprience. I would like to now @ toughnes of syllabus of MS as doing along with works seems to be hard. Also can we apply for Ph.d on basis of MS PG? Also i heard that if there is any backlog subject in semester we need to give full me instead of backlogs subjects only, is it right ?

    PThanks in advace.

    -Rahul

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

First its very easy to pass. But to get CGPA over 7 is tough!
Yes you can do PhD from various institutes but for PhD you need CGPA over 7.5 for reputed universities :)

For Backlogs only a particular subject is repeated not all. But fees of whole semester is to be paid. That is quite a financial downside. But clearing is easy, you will manage.

    All the best!

  • Rahul

Thanks for clarification. Paying fees for whole semester even for one backlog is really shocking and needless. I wonder why they made such rule which is causing financial loss to students.

  • Rahul

Can you please tell me list of subjects for MS from BITS ? or maybe link where it is showing list of same ?

  • Rahul

Can we complete MS(BITS) in 1 year instead of 2 years? If yes, how do we complete in 1 year ? Also i heard that there are 2 papers back to back in a day for examination, If yes, isn’t it difficult to give 2 papers examination back to back in a single day ?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

NO. it is a 2 year course comprising of 4 Semesters :) So no way of completing it in 1 years. For BITS Pilani MS Program.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh
  • Rahul

    Thanks a lot :)

    Hi Rahul,

I am pursuing MS SS from BITS.I am in first Sem now.

    I want to know

What will be the portion if we go for make up exams for mid?will it be same as regular mid sem or will be more?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

The syllabus is same. But the paper is generally tough and so is the checking compared to regular one.

  • Manjusha

    Hi Rahul,

I have done my B.Tech in Electronics and Communication and currently working in Infosys, testing. I have an exp of 1 year. Can i enroll for MS in SS(Bits Pilani) with this exp or a 2 yrs exp is needed for this? Also my Electronics background hinders me from having me a great knowledge in Computer science. will it very difficult for me for MS in SS? Please advice.

  • Smita

Thank you for your response. I had a couple of questions.

I have read a few posts on the internet that suggest that this course may not be as profitable to a candidate who has a BE in CS as the MSSS course takes up the same subjects that are present in the BE course. As you are already taking up the course, what are your views on this?

What is the experience profile of candidates who take up this course? Does it make sense for someone with more than 8 years of experience to consider taking this course?

  • http://www.facebook.com/harish.kumar.50115 Harish Kumar

hi, am ece student and i have 1 year exp in VLSI feild. so i want to do my ms program in VLSI domain. is there any distance program in VLSI feild

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    No idea.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Yes you can. Its easy, may of my friends in EC have done from here with CGPA of over 8 :)

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    1. The profit is if you organization needs a Post-Graduate. As BE/B Tech is just graduate and hinders in promotions of employees in Govt/R&D Organizations. I am about to complete the course in June.
This not for switching another IT company, for that you need profile and certifications.

    2. Yes few subjects are but there are options to select subjects. NON-CS students take easy ones, we can select subjects which we have not covered in Engineering.

Many people with 20 years experience go for this course as they need it for promotions and career growth.

  • Smita

Thanks again for your response, which was both concise as well as informative.
    A couple more:

How often do you have to visit the campus for project submissions etc. and for what duration?
In the event that exam timetable falls at a time a candidate is not in India, is there an alternative , such as an online format available subject to prior notice to the college?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Exams are at respective City Centers on Satirday and Sunday. for Mid-Sem and End Sem –> No visit to campus but there are makeup exams if u miss the regular ones. They are one month after the regular exam. Being present for the xam is compulsory.

For Project one day you have to be present in campus for viva. However those who are at onsite may give via teleconference. But reason has to be justified.

  • Smita

Thanks Rahul. Your answers were very helpful.

  • Manjusha

Oh that’s great news for me.. :) and do we need a 2 yr experience to join this course?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    I think its 1 year.
Check their website for exact details.

  • Smitha

    Hi Rahul,

a> How interactive are the classes? Is it possible to ask questions during the lectures? In other words, is the class live ?
b> I heard that there is a policy that no other course should be taken up while this course is taken up. Is it true? I might be sponsored for a 1 year course from office, wanted to know if MSSS enrollment will create problems for me.
c> How rigorous is the course for a computer science graduate? How many hours of study is required per week? Considering that I am planning on taking up electives that were not present in my bachelors degree.

    Thanks in advance,
    Smitha

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    a) 15-18 classes for each subject. Yes classes are are live and you can ask questions if you attend the same online via web meeting. In case you miss, there is option to download the same lecture video later on. Attending the same is not mandatory.

b)Yes, you cannot take another course simultaneously. They are quite strict about this.

c)Its easy, studying a week before exams is enough to get over 7 CGPA for an engineer.

    All the best.

  • Smitha

    Hi, Thanks for the reply.

    Regarding
a> are classes to be held at a specific classroom or it can be taken up (live) from where ever we find it easy, like home or during travel?
b> This sounds a little bit unreasonable. How is it relevant if we take up another course as long as we manage to get good grades, considering this is a distance learning course? Is there a chance they might relax this rule if the scores are good enough (assessment after a year or so) and upon request by the employing company and the candidate?

    Thanks in advance,
    Smitha

  • kanchana

    Hi Rahul,
I and a friend have 2 + yrs in IT development, we are planning to do MS from BITS but we are not working in MNC .. is it possible to apply ? if so wat would be the fee structure..

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Working in MNC is not a requirement. you should be working in any organization. MS is designed for working professionals only.

  • kanchana

    Thanks for quick reply.
Details in this are not clear,

Hi Rahul, how can and from where i have to choose the mentor?Currently am working in a small concern.after joining the m.s course in BITS if i resigned my job can i continue my studies by without reporting this to the College?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Mentor must be from same organization or you can choose from outside as well. Like I had done. The mentor must be either M Tech or B Tech with over 5 years of experience.

After joining MS course, if you switch company you just have to fill a form and get permission from HR of new company. No issues.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Work Integrated program are MS – Software Systems.
Details on the links of this page : http://www.bits-pilani.ac.in/university/wilp/WILPCourseDiscriptions

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    a) No it has to be taken online and yes you can attend from anywhere. You need an internet connection. Thats it.
    b) Yes but true. You can talk to dean for any exceptions. But I doubt they will agree to this. Details of dean are on their website.

  • Rahul

I head that there are 2 days examination for a semester having 2 papers in each day back to back?

is’t this to be difficult to give exam of 2 papers in day back to back and same on next day immediately ?

    Please advice on same :)

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

No its not. Thousands of working employees give the exams and pass :)

  • Rahul

Can you please tell @ exam conducting pattern for MS BITS -
    1) How do they conduct the exams ?
    2) Are there 4 papers on each day for a semester or something else ?

  • Abhijith S

Is the MS course is AICTE approved?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    No. Its UGC Approved only.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Exams are conducted like real exams. Like B. Tech.

No. 2 papers on Saturday and 2 papers on Sunday.

Each Semster has 2 exams – mid sem and end-sem
And total 4 semesters in 2 years.

  • Rahul

For MS(BITS) exam, only online notes (provided by BITS) are sufficient or do we need to study from books also?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

For passing yes. To get a good CGPA ie over 8, you need to study from books as well.

  • Rahul

    Thanks :)

Am planning to pursue MS SS (WILP) frm BITS this year. Just wanted to know, if degree certificate provided by BITS for WILP is same
regular or full time course. Do they mention it anywhere saying “Part-time or Distance education” in the degree certi.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    No. Its nowhere written.

    But Regular Course is M.E.
    and Distance one is M.S.

  • Ramesh

    Dear Rahul Singh,

could you please tell me what is the difference in between doing MS in other countries such as U.S.A or U.K and doing it in India (Bits Pilani)? which one has more value?

    Thanks in advance….. :)

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    There is huge difference.

Its like Engineering from IITs and comparing with Private College.
MS BITS –> Correspondence Course for working professionals along with work

MS from Outside –> Depends on the University.

  • rj

    Hi Rahul,

I am planning to apply for this course in April. I have B.E (Electronics) with 7 Years of Work Experience and I am currently working in Infosys.

For My Work I need to frequently travel to Onsite (sometimes for long duration)

Is it possible to attend exams with such schedule i.e. can the exams be postponed… taken up together for Mid-sem and final sem or for two sems together.

I don’t see any other reason why i cant do this course except for my availability in India for the Exams. Please help.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Rahul

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Every sem there are 2 times exam- Mid sem (closed book) & End Sem (open book). Both exams are to be given by being present at the examination center physically.

If you miss the exams, same is conducted 2-3 weeks after the regular exams ie Makeup Exams.

Now, if you leave for long duration, you may skip a semester and not pay any fees. Your degree will complete in 2 years and 6 months. Many of my friends who went onsite did this. Even few did it for a year as well.

But, leaving in between will mean you fail in that semster and has to be repeated again. So either attend the complete semester or drop complete semester.

There is no provision of giving examination remotely. Physical presence at the examination canter is the only way.

Hope this clarifies. All the best!!

  • Manju

Hi i have completed BE in ECE & working in Tele communication industry from past 4 Years , planning to take BITS M.S.

  • rj

Thanks a Lot Rahul. This Helps. And Very Kind of you for taking time out and replying to queries from so many people.
    Thanks Again

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    Yes you are eligible.

MS is helpful for people looking for PG degree in promotions in Gobt/PSU or for people in R&D.
Don’t expect a salary hike/Switch by this. You need skills and certifications for that.

  • ManjuS

    Thanks for information…

one more thing …. As per BITS portal some courses are only offered to colabarated companies like M.S. Telecommunications and Software Engineering are only … do the offer the same to employe who is working in other company other than colabarated companies.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Yes true, for that you need to be in that organization.

If I am not wrong, only MS – Software Systems can be opted independently.

They play a little role in jobs switching.. more on your work and promotions.

  • Smita

    Hi Rahul,

What does a mentor’s work involve? I came to know from another source that mentor’s work takes less than 1 hour for a semester. Is this true?

Is it possible to call up BITS Pilani and ask anyone there about role of a mentor in detail along with what is the requirement for mentorship?

What if the mentor plans to give up his/her employment and starts a business during the course of mentorship? Is the mentorship still valid in that case?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Mentor work is very less, many people just go for signature thats it.
The role of mentor is clearly defined in the course on their website.

  • manish

hi, i am interested in doing ma MS in pilani ….. i will complete ma B,Tech (IT) in 2013… may i know the procedure for doing MS in pilani…

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

BITS MS is for working professionals only. 1 year work experience is mandatory. All details of course on their website.

    Hi Rahul,

As per law, Universities do not require AICTE approval. Only institutions which are affiliated to Universities require approval. As BITS is deemed University is a Bonafide University established by a State Act, it does not require AICTE approval. So it means MS degree provided by BITS has no need of AICTE approval so why cant I apply for PhD in CSE in engineering colleges other than BITS on basis of this MS Software Engineering degree and why cant it is comapared to at par of M Tech level. Please clear my doubts….

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org Rahul Singh

There is difference between regular course and BITS MS offiline course.
The course is not AICTE approved, but UGC approved.
Many universities don’t allow PhD for PG courses like BITS Pilani. You will have to check the respective university for that.

  • Sarang

Same query of this guest… I too have. Rahul could you please answer as I also wish to apply for PhD in CSE in reputed engineering college post MS?

  • srinivas

    Dear rahul,

I am planning to do MS in (SS)BITS, is it recognized by companies like HCL,TCS, with this degree can i get job?,

  • Vishnu

    Hi rahul,
i have 5 years of experience in IT and currently working ith IBM. MY B.E score is not 60% aggregate.

    I am i eligible

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    Dear Srinivas,

BITS MS is not meant for getting jobs. It is mainly meant for people in R&D Organization, where PG is must or in Govt Jobs where it is needed for promotions.

For good job switch you must focus on certifications and enhancing ur skills in your domain.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

I am not sure but I think yes.
Check there website if they have this criteria.. as far as I remember when I had applied it was 50% and above.

Rahul, Thanks for sharing your experience.

    I have a few questions:
    (i) Can we have mentors who are 10+ years of experience (Architects/Technical Managers) but have only Bachelor’s degree as their highest qualification.
(ii) What is the best way to reach Bits Pilani? The number which is specified in the site is always goving Network busy message
(iii) I am an MCA graduate. I believe I am eligible. Right?
(iv) By when the admission notification for 2013 would come?

    Please reply. Thanks in advance.
    Narayan

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    1. Yes, B. Tech ones must be in senior position with 5+ years exp. I had one with 6 years exp.
    2. They rarely do. You can email them at the email id on their website. They have jotted down all points on their website.
    3.Yes
    4. April 2013

    All the best :)

  • Narayan

Thanks a lot for the quick reply Rahu. You are fab..:)

One more question… Suppose that our mentor is in a different location, say in US, will it be a problem? I have my friend architect working in US who will be willing to help me.. Please reply…

  • Guest

Could you please provide reply on this, Yes or No?
    Thanks

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Signature of Mentor is needed at the starting of the sem and in Dissertation few times.Make sure you are able to get it.

  • sudheer

    Hi Rahul,
Can you tell me what is the minimum percentage required to clear the exam. as of now i got only 20% in EC1 and EC2 of one of my subjects.how much i need to score for the remaining 50% to clear the subject.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

There is no predefined marks for pass. It is based on everyone’s marks.

    In short -
For tough subjects in which everyone scores low its down to 20/100
for high scoring subjects its max to 35/100

    Hi Rahul,

I have been looking for some information on the MS – Software Systems course and found your blog really helpful. :)
I am a female professional with a B.Tech degree (ECE) from a good institute with good grades, with IT experience of around 3.5 years. I would like to pursue higher studies in Computer Science, but I don’t think I have a background to clear the entrance tests for that! This is why I have begun to consider taking up this course.
Some queries that I have for you:
    1. Value of course – As per your responses to some earlier questions, it’s not very helpful for switching jobs. My query is whether it would be of any help if I wish to switch to the teaching profession, sometime later in my career.
    2. Limit of course duration – I am a little skeptical about the project work. What if I am unable to complete it in the mentioned 6 months? Is there a possibility of stretching it to more than 6 months? Also, please tell me how complex the project work is; if it would even need any extension. :)
    3. Role of mentor – I am unable to understand how much is expected from the mentor. Also, if the admission depends on who we select as our mentor.

Thanks in advance for your response!

  • Sundeep

    Hi Rahul,
Iam planning to join Bits for MS software Systems. I currently work for a MNC and have 3 yrs of exp.
Can you let me know if there are any placements for MS Software Systems and if Yes whats the pay and all other stuff related

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

You are eligible for he course.

BITS MS is a distant learning course. There are NO Placements offered by this program. And don’t expect a job switch by this program. his is ideally suited for people in R&D organizations/project or people seeking higher education for promotions in Gov/PSUs.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    1. It will help you in getting a PG Degree and later on you can pursue a PhD and then perhaps you can switch to teaching line. In Govt Colleges. Only regular Mech/phD are allowed. However in private college you can easily be a professor.

2.Project work is of 6 months and you may skip it in a semester and take it next sem. Like many of my firends who went onsite, droped a semester and took it in next sem. you delay you degree by 6 months by each drop.

    3. Mentor is more of a formality. Though ideally is is expeced to be in constant touch with mentor.

Signatures are needed once in start and twice in dissertation.

  • Abhijith S

Hi Rahul,I have only 7 months of work experience and I am willing to do MS through bits pilani. Am I eligible..? I am living in Bangalore. Can I take the exams here only through online..? I am an average student and Can I study for the exam on my own..?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

No. You need 1 year experience at the time of application of MS.
Since the admission is twice a year – April and November. You may apply in November 2013.

    All the best:)

  • Yasha

Hi Rahul, I know that bits is UGC approved but is this course UGC approved?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    Dear Yogaraj,

The process is well illustrated on their website. Please check the same. I joined 2 years back so you need to refer the latest instructions as per their website.
2 year of Work Experience does qualify you for the course.
    All the best!

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Yes. BITS MS course is UGC approved. But not AICTE approved.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Sorry for delay in reply was busy last few weeks.

You are absolutely right. Except the criteria which IITs and many premier institute specify
    “Graduate from AICTE Approved organization”
I don’t have idea why it is like this.

However many other institute offer PhD Programs like IGNOU, etc from where you can do PhD.

I was lukin for some inputs on MS course in BITS and I stumbled upon ur blog. I’ve to say its nothin less than superb.. :) I won’t flood u with ques but jus a couple of them. I’ve planned to take quality mgmt course. can u give me some suggestions on how gud the course is if u r aware? and how r u managing with the reading materials. they give us e-books alright. but apart from that u bought ur own text books? thanx for ur help! :)

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    Thanks a lot :)
I did my MS from Software Systems, so no idea about Quality Management. However you can check the same from their website the course coverage and might give u some idea.

Reading materials are only PPT and Video lectures that are downloadable from their taxila website, which are quite good in most of the subjects. But you also need to refer the prescribed tex books. These text books are to be bought yourself.

    All the best :)

    Hi Rahul,

Thanks for the Information.I have 2 years of experience in software industry.Right now I am working in a private engineering college as a lecturer.Am i eligible to apply for MS in Software systems,If i am able to get mentor from any MNC who would guide me? Is it compulsory to be working in software industry and then only eligible to apply for this program?

Can you please do reply to this.

    Thanks
    Sunil

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Yes you are eligible as this course is for working lectureres as well. Regarding Mentor, you can check the brochure on their website. I think a professor can be mentor as well. But check.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Yes, as WILP is UGC but not AICTE.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    Yes, depends on college criteria.

WILP is UGC and not AICTE. So check accordingly.

  • Narayan

    Hi Rahul,

What if we are travelling to say US for long term after getting admission? Is there any online test? Or we will just miss the chance? Could you please tell me. Awaiting response.

    –Best regards,
    Narayan

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

There is no online test. Test has to given by being physically present at the examination center.

If you miss any exam, whole semester fees has to be paid and the subjects missed has to be repeated of that semester.

For example, many of my friends going onside for 6 months or a year.. drop the semester and join back after they come India. Yiur degree complete in 2+(Missed time) years.

  • chandana

    Hi Rahul,

Great blog! I m interested to pursue M.S computer science through distance learning. I have one half years of experience in R&D MNC. How do you rate BITS pilani M.S in software systems over M.S distance education courses provided by U.S universities like UIUC, NCSU, georgia tech? Does BITSpilani M.S help in career growth in R&D MNC? At the end of the course, M.S certificate awarded by BITSpilani is same as oncampus M.S or correspondence M.S one? Do candidates with BITSpilani M.S and 2+ years of exp have an edge over more exp candidates while applying to big companies?

  • chandana

    Hi Rahul,

BIT pilani M.S in sofware systems is not AICTE approved. So can we pursue Ph.D from any deemed or state universities later? One of your posts say cgpa > 7.5 may help candidates get Ph.D seat in other universities. Does NET certificate with M.S help in becoming asst. professor in govt colleges?

  • Same Guest

I did my MS from BITS and now pursuing PhD at IIT Kanpur… How is that?

  • Balaji

Hi friends, i am Mechanical Graduate with 4 years exp in Project Managementnt,I like to join MS in Quality management in Bits ,will it helpful future.
    Pls guide me…..

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    No, you cannot apply.
Only working professionals can apply for this course. and they must have 1 year work experience as well.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    Its the best correspondence course.
Don’t compare it with regular M Techs, its stands nowhere.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

You cannot compare Correspondence Course with a regular course.
BITS MS is best course if you want to opt for offline correspondence course. It does help in Job Switching in Private Companies. It may however help in your work profile depending on your work & organization. Check with seniors in your organization regarding this.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

True but many colleges accept. Depends on the entry criteria mentioned while PhD admission.

    Yes it does.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

I guess they do allow non AICTE then. The information I have was form seniors. I am looking myself for PhD from IITs.

  • Rekha

    Hi Rahul,

I want to know how to approach for this MS programme. Can u pls help me this doing so…
    Thanks in Advance

  • chandana

Ok. Thanks Rahul! But what about the certificate given at the end of the course? Will it have correspondence course mentioned on it or its same as the on campus certificate?

  • raghav

    Hi Rahul,
Can we apply for PHD in Foreign Universities in US after completing MS SS (DIstance Learning) From BITS Pilani?

Also is it possible to share Video Lectures or lecture slides from BITS Pilani to get some idea of the course.

    Thanks a lot.

  • Raghav

    Hi Rahul,

Can we apply for a PHD in United States after pursuing MS SS(Distance Learning) from BITS Pilani? Will this course be recognized as a Masters Level Degree there? From the discussions, I see that you cannot pursue a PHD in India in any other University except BITS Pilani since it is not AICTE approved. If you know anything about this, it would be great.

Also if you can share some of Lecture videos or PPT’s so as to get some brief idea of how the course would be like, it would be nice.

    Thanks

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    Just check their website.
    http://www.bits-pilani.ac.in/university/wilp/wilpoverview

hi Rahul, Thank you for all the info i got from this blog. I am applying for the ms program this year. I have one question. Is the mentor is really required to get admitted. I mean can we have admission without a mentor. I am finding it difficult to find any. Thanks.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

Mentor is compulsory. You mat opt from someone out of the organization as well.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    I am not from Wipro.

I think if you raise a ticket with HR, they may help.
Its easy to get as far as I know from my friends.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

No idea of MS – Quality Management

But the classes are online and can be download if you miss them Online. Attendance is not mandatory.

Exams are held at examination centers on weekends.

  • pbk

Is Examination pattern is completely objective?

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    There is no entrance exam.

and Semesters are not objective, They are theoretical.

    Hi Rahul,
Its a really helpful blog. I got answers of many queries. I am applying for Bits Pilani MSSS.. I just want to know that if I am taking transfer to a different location within India after the 1st semester, will it be possible to take up exams for other sems from the changed location. Please suggest.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

If location is changed, yes you can still take up exams.
    1. Exam Centers – Exams are conducted at all Metro Cities in India, just fill form for location change and you get your center changed.
    3. Employer’s Consent – If yo switch companies, you have to submit the employers consent from your new employer.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

It can be both sponsored and non-sponsored.

1 year experience is required for applying it. Make sure the date used for cutt of date makes your 1 year complete. This date is in the application form. Check their website for it.

  • http://www.rahulsingh.org/ Rahul Singh

    1. The course subjects and syllabus are mentioned on their website. Please check.
    2. There is no placement assistance for this correspondence course.
